I wake up, bright and early, ready to start my day

I wake up, bright and early, ready to start my day. As I eat my breakfast, I pull out my phone to play the new, trendy online game. Sweat trickles down my temple as I carefully calculate the next word. As a few tense minutes tick by, my focus starts to wane. Finally, I type in my 5-letter word, pleading to the greater powers that be that it’s correct. Promptly after I tap the Enter button, all the letters flip to green. “Splendid!” the screen reads. My confidence soars. My day has just been brightened. I exclaim, “Mom, I got the Wordle!”

Wordle, the recent internet phenomenon is a word-game, in which players guess the quinate word with a different one each day. “Wordlers” get six tries to guess the undisclosed word, and can share their outcomes with friends and family.

Ballet, simply said, is a racist sport. While this stems from various reasons, it mostly comes from underlying white supremacy. It’s a white dominated field, and the discipline, the attire, even the fetishization all contribute to the looming, hidden issue of the problematic values stemming from the white idealistic version of ballet.

As an opulent, exclusive, and principally white industry, this art form originated during the Italian Renaissance during the 15th century. First as court entertainment for aristocrats, royals and nobles alike, the industry was composed of mostly countries instead of professional dancers. Surprisingly, royals sometimes took part in the activity. Louis XIV’s dancing was even considered a prime example of dancing for nobles. It then developed into a complement for opera performances, called opéra-ballets. Over the next several centuries, France and Russia began to form their own spins off the traditional Italian sport.

To what extent can someone love their job? Today, millions of people say they have no passion in what they do, they don’t earn enough for what they do, or they feel constant overwhelming pressure because of what they do. Abby Ruehlmann says otherwise.

“I can’t imagine not getting excited about going to work every day,” Clague eighth grade ELA teacher Abby Ruehlmann said. “That just sounds like a hard way to live.”

Math teacher Kelly Lamberjack didn’t expect to b

Math teacher Kelly Lamberjack didn’t expect to be an educator. Teaching since 1994, she originally planned to become a pediatrician from college at Eastern Michigan University.

“I had thought about going into pediatrics because I was working with science, and I was working with kids, which I had loved to do,” Lamberjack said. “I had worked in a hospital. And I had worked with a lot of doctors and they were doing great things but then you know, when I got to college, I was just kind of like, what do I want to do with my life?”

When she had to take a break from school due to her health and other factors, she was inspired by all the teachers in her life to enter the education field.

Eighth grader Luciana Vanini has been a swimmer si

Eighth grader Luciana Vanini has been a swimmer since she was 9-years-old. She swims at the Orchard Hills Athletic Club during the summer and the Whitmore Lake Community Pool during winter time.

“My favorite part about swimming is the competitions,” Vanini said. “Everyone is friends so it’s fun to cheer each other on at competitions.”

COVID has changed how things work, though.

“Because of the pandemic,” Vanini said, “it is scary sometimes to have to go into a pool without a mask on. The fear that comes with COVID has been tough.”

The Ann Arbor District Library (AADL) is hosting i

The Ann Arbor District Library (AADL) is hosting its annual writing contest. As usual, there is the kids’ short story contest, “Write On!” for grades 3 – 5, as well as the teen short story, poetry, and flash fiction contest, “It’s All Write!” for grades 6 – 12.

The teen contest will be accepting submissions from Jan. 10 to March 6. Judging is separated into three categories by grade; 6-8, 9&10, and 11&12. There will be “fabulous prizes” for the top three winners in each category. The awards ceremony will be held on Saturday, May 21. This link has more information.

The kids’ contest is open from Jan. 10 to Feb. 7. The top three winners of each grade will get a prize, and the awards ceremony is going to be held on April 23, featuring a children’s author.

“I grew up in Cleveland, the youngest of five kids. We played in the neighborhood with lots of friends, and I still remember one enormous snowstorm that closed the schools for days – we had a blast outside building forts and having snowball fights. When I graduated from high school, I went to the U of M to study creative writing and journalism. I was also a photographer for the school newspaper and yearbook. (My pivot to math came later .) Now I’m kept busy raising two teenage boys and dreaming of retirement (when I hope to hike the Appalachian Trail!)”

Due to an increase in COVID cases in the community

Due to an increase in COVID cases in the community, Ann Arbor Public Schools has decided to postpone the return to school after winter break. Superintendent Jeanice Swift sent out an email on Dec. 31 saying that schools will be closed Monday, Jan. 3, and Tuesday, Jan. 4, and classes will resume online from Wednesday, Jan. 5 to Friday, Jan. 6.
