Ulta and Sephora are two of the most popular beauty stores in the United States, and many people love shopping at both. Even though they sell similar products like makeup, skincare, and haircare, the two stores feel very different.

Ulta is known for being a place where almost anyone can shop because it carries products at many price levels. Sephora, on the other hand, focuses more on high‑end brands and a more luxurious shopping experience.
One of the biggest differences between the two stores is the types of brands they sell. Ulta carries a mix of drugstore brands, like e.l.f. and Maybelline, along with more expensive brands such as Tarte and Clinique. This makes it easy for shoppers to find something that fits their budget.
Sephora mostly sells prestige and luxury brands, including Fenty Beauty, Laneige, and Drunk Elephant. Many of these brands are exclusive to Sephora, which means you can’t find them at Ulta.
“I like Sephora better than Ulta because I like the products more,” 6th grader Claire Jung said.
The shopping experience also feels different at each store. Ulta stores are usually bright, open, and organized into clear sections. Many locations even have full salons where customers can get haircuts, coloring, or brow services.

Sephora stores are smaller and more stylish, with beauty advisors who help customers find the right products. They also use special tools, like skin scanners and shade‑matching devices, to help people choose the best products for their skin.
Both stores have rewards programs, but they work in different ways. Ulta’s Ultamate Rewards program is great for saving money because the points you earn can be used like cash on future purchases.
Sephora’s Beauty Insider program focuses more on perks, like birthday gifts, samples, and early access to new products.
In the end, Ulta is a great choice for shoppers who want variety and affordability, while Sephora is perfect for people who enjoy trying high‑end brands and having a more personalized beauty experience.
