The Thurston Community Players are almost ready to kick off the show with their new play, Rollin’ on the Riverboat, this weekend. All performers and tech crew are practicing and preparing for it, all of whom have exceptional talent to give audiences more than they pay for. Rollin’ on the Riverboat will be a hilarious musical, scheduled to last an hour and 15-30 minutes with a 15-minute intermission where concessions will be available. Perfomances are March 7 and 8 from 6-8 p.m. at Huron High Schoo.
The sets and script were created by the players themselves, and the whole show is made up by local people in the community. All proceeds from ticket sales go to the Thurston and Clague PTOs and to paying for next year’s show. Students from the community make up a large portion of the actors and tech crew.
Sophomore Lyla Cox has been performing with the group for the past nine years.
“Ever since I was five, I have been part of this theater group and community,” Cox said. “Over the years, we have built a community and a family together, and every year we can’t wait to go back and see our theater friends. This is one of the best family-friendly community productions, and this year marks the 50th production. It is going to be a really exciting time, and I hope you all can come see it this weekend.”
Students are divided into age groups, and each performs a musical number, with the exception of sixth grade and up, who participate in more than one scene. This year is an important show for the Thurston Community Players, as it marks their fiftieth production, and they are marching past on their way and on to a hundred. Ever since the first show, The Great Cats-B, in 1975, the players have brought fun and comedy to the stage with their school spirit, which will continue to live on as a cherished community tradition for generations to come.
