At Clague Middle School, the new seventh grade counselor was hired last month: Derrick Hallman.
“I came to Clague because I wanted to be part of a school community that values student growth and support,” Hallman said. “I heard great things about the students and staff here, and I wanted to be in a place where I could make a positive impact.”
Hallman grew up in Michigan and was a collegiate football player.
“Being an athlete helped shape my discipline, work ethic, and passion for teamwork,” Hallman said. “I enjoy staying active, spending time outdoors, and working out.”
In addition to his passion for teamwork, he has found his calling in focusing on students both in class and outside of class, and he knows that every day is a new day.
“Professionally, I am a school counselor who is deeply passionate about helping students succeed both academically and personally,” Hallman said. “I take pride in building strong relationships with students, supporting them through challenges, and guiding them as they plan for their future.
Hallman expressed that he tries to be as efficient as possible and make sure every student feels heard, even if I can’t solve everything right away.
“I will address every need and fix as much as I can,” Hallman said.
While Hallman’s office is located on the second floor, students will see him out in the halls working with students every day.
“Students should know that I’m here for them, no matter what,” Hallman said. “Whether it’s something big or small, they can always come talk to me. I’ll listen without judgment, because I don’t judge anyone’s journey, and I’ll do my best to support them. I truly believe that we are all perfectly imperfect people, and no one is better or worse than anyone else.”
