Chelsea Party Loft invited The Cougar Star out to check out their venue. This is a collaboration with the business.
In January 2023, as COVID-19 restrictions were easing and students were returning to classrooms full time, a local middle school PTO president decided it was time to bring back something students had been missing: a school dance.
After more than three years of virtual classes, canceled activities and limited social events, Joe Gattuso believed tweens and teens were overdue for a chance to have fun. With the principal’s support, he helped organize the event, even though past dances had drawn modest crowds. Organizers planned for about 200 students, booked a DJ, rented a photo booth and ordered 50 pizzas. More than 400 students showed up.
“Some people said, ‘Nobody’s going to come. You’re wasting your time,’” Gattuso said. “But we ended up with about 450 people there.”
Watching the packed gym that night, he realized the impact went beyond a single event.
“I was watching everything going on. People were using the photo booth, eating pizza, dancing, making selfies and TikToks,” Gattuso said. “I thought, wow, what a great time these kids are having,”
That moment became the spark for Chelsea Party Loft, a dedicated event venue he describes as “the school dance without the school.”
“I said, what if I could make a business out of this?” Gattuso said. “What if I could create a room that was kind of like a school dance, but without the school?”
Over the next two years, he searched for the right location to bring the idea to life. He eventually secured a space in Chelsea Village Plaza, across from the Secretary of State office. But opening the doors was only part of his vision.
“We set out to provide value for parents who face the daunting task of impressing hard-to-please teens,” Gattuso said. “One year later, we hosted birthday parties for guests aged 9 to 90. We’ve helped create memories that will last a lifetime, and we are just getting started.”
As the father of a teenager in Ann Arbor Public Schools, Gattuso had attended and booked numerous parties and events. After reviewing more than 25 local venues, he decided to build a simpler model that addressed common frustrations families experience when planning celebrations.
“I wanted to create a spot that was a little more affordable and also gives you a VIP treatment,” Gattuso said. “When you come in here, there are no other parties going on. It is just your birthday or your event.”
Chelsea Party Loft operates on an hourly rate with no minimum booking requirement. The cost is $99 per hour Monday through Thursday, $149 per hour Friday and Sunday, and $199 per hour on Saturdays. The rate includes tables, chairs, linens, a sound system, disco lights, a greenery wall, an audio guestbook and a 360 video booth.
“I try to make it really easy for parents to book this place,” Gattuso said. “Everything you see here is included, and I don’t make it very complicated.”
Gattuso said the venue is locally owned and operated, and customers work directly with him during the booking process.
“I’ll tell you the truth about anything here,” he said. “It’s important for a business owner to hear what customers actually think.”
At its core, Gattuso said Chelsea Party Loft is meant to give students and families a place to celebrate together in a fun and welcoming space.
“I designed this area for people your age to come and check it out,” he said. “I want to hear what you think and how we can make it even better.”
More than a year after opening, the idea that started with one middle school dance continues to guide the business. Gattuso hopes the space will keep giving students a place to celebrate milestones, spend time with friends and create lasting memories.
