Clague offers virtual and in-person classes for geography, science, math and English and more. The most common subject to take virtually is math, which is what a lot of Cougars are taking right now. But which is better for math class? An A2V or in-person math class? Let’s find out the opinions of the Cougar’s and some facts.
A2V:
In A2V, you have more time to study for the summative test than in-person classes.
Unlike in-person math classes, there is no specific day you take your test. You just have a deadline for when to finish the test by.
If you are finished with your work you can do homework from other classes. Only one year worth of math class (A and B) can be completed in a semester.
You can also work faster and get ahead then your current grade of math. Some people are in high school math while they are in middle school because they did A2V. Additionally, you still get enough knowledge about the topic.
“Doing A2V gives you more freedom and time to procrastinate, and in person math gives you more of a rigid schedule. The pros of going to Huron to take math is it is a good experience for when you go to high school and you take the math that challenges you.”, an 8th grader Jaeyoung Lee said.
If you do A2V, you can also work outside of school, which would boost up your speed.
“A2V is good because you can also do the course at home and you don’t need to only learn at school. You could ask your parents at your house if you don’t understand a topic,” seventh grader Dana Yang said. “You could ask your friends near you. You don’t need to wait for the teacher’s email. If you do A2V, you can also work in the library and it’s really quiet and peaceful and fun.”
I personally think that A2V is a very good math class to take if you want to get ahead of your grade level. I did A2V math class in fifth grade and am currently doing 10th grade math and I like how I can skip topics I already know in A2V, unlike in in-person classes.
IN-PERSON MATH:
One of the pros about in-person is there is a teacher next to you. If you need help with a problem, you could go straight to them and ask. There are also classmates who could help you.
In in-person math, the teachers supervise students in their monitors and physically. This prevents students from cheating or other dishonest things you could do in class.
“I believe that by choosing A2V as your math option, it opens students to problems such as cheating and slacking off of their work,” seventh grader Colin Kim said. “By working in a physical classroom, it gives students the supervision and discipline of a guardian who can monitor and track the student’s progress both academically and in focus.”
For people who get distracted easily, in-person math would be good since there is a teacher constantly correcting behavior.
“I get distracted easily, and without a teacher there paying attention to how much work I’ve done, I’ll do nothing,” seventh grader Ardra Murali said. “Anyways, I don’t think I’m going to make more progress in A2V than in-person math, and other than that and the knowledge quiz, there’s not much of a reason to do A2V.”
I think that in-person math is a very fun class. You could do other activities in the classroom but in A2v you can’t do any fun activities. You just sit down and learn math on the computer. In in-person math classes, you also have more detailed learning and understanding.
OVERALL:
Overall, both of the classes have their own pros and cons.
If you are able to work on your own, not get off task and pace yourself, you could choose A2V. But if you are easily distracted, need a supervisor, and want to get more knowledge on the unit, in-person classes take a more hands-on approach, offering a deeper level of understanding. If you want to get ahead of your grade level, A2V will help you. Both are good depending on your way of learning and your needs.
I asked the question, “Do you think virtual math is better or in-person class math is better in middle school math classes?”, to 25 people and 8 said virtual math is better while the other 17 people said in-person math classes are better.
