Today, we will answer the question of the century: Which is better? Band or orchestra. First of all, we can’t decide which is better, but we can list some pros and cons.
Band
Band Pros
Band has some fun pros. First, it’s pretty easy to tune your instrument. All you have to do is pull a tuning slide or twist a part. Another pro is that you can be in the marching band. This is a big pro because I think that marching band is so cool.
Band Cons
Band isn’t perfect. It has a few cons. First, your mouth gets tired. Next, you can get a headache if you don’t give yourself breaks. Third, spit gets into your instrument. This can make you sound bad, but it can also just be gross. And lastly, your instrument can be heavy. For example, tubas weigh about 20-50 pounds on average.
Orchestra
Orchestra Pros
Orchestra has many pros. You can bring the music to life with vibrato, and many different bow strokes. For example, a brush-like bow stroke and many more. In orchestra, you can either do pizzicato (plucking the strings) or do arco (using your bow).
Orchestra Cons
Orchestra also has a few cons. First, tuning your instrument can be hard sometimes, especially during the wintertime. Your instrument can easily become out of tune because of the weather. If you are just beginning to learn how to tune your instrument, it can be very challenging. Also, if you put too much pressure on your hand, it can really hurt! It can sometimes be hard to find the right amount of pressure to put on your hand. Next, if you play your instrument with bad posture, your back or your arm could hurt, depending on what orchestra instrument you play. It can be a struggle for some people to play with good posture. Finally, playing the correct intonation (pitch) could be a challenge too. It is often hard to play the exact pitch.
Orchestra and Band
Cons of Band and Orchestra
There are some cons that band and orchestra share too! First of all, band and orchestra instruments can be hard to fix and replace and it can be very expensive. Next, it can sometimes take a long time to get your instrument ready to play. Finally, transportation can be hard for certain musicians. Cello, Bass, Tuba, Euphonium, and Trombone could be a challenge to move these instruments from one place to another.
Pros of Band and Orchestra
There are some pros that band and orchestra share, so here they are. You can be really creative when you are playing. Whether piano, forte, pulsing sound, or vibrato, you can have a variety of pitches, sounds, and feelings.
