This year, when people wanted to try out for the seventh and eighth grade men’s soccer team, they soon found out they would have to go to a different field to practice and play.
Fields at Clague are being used as a construction site for the new elementary school, Logan Elementary. This is at the detriment of our teams since we don’t get as much practice time as other school teams.
As a player on the men’s soccer team at Clague, I played in seventh grade when there wasn’t any construction. The field was so nice, and the team had enough practice time. I very much enjoyed playing soccer that year. This year, however, was not as fun and had lots of negative comments from the team, including myself. I still liked playing soccer because I enjoy playing the sport, but it was hard to decide when I got the email that I made the team if I wanted to play or not.
Soccer and field hockey lost their practice and game locations. The district decided that the fields at Steam School would be good because they were the closest, and while this was a good idea because there were people that wanted to play, we had to take a 10-15 minute bus ride to get there every day. Instead of just walking outside of Clague Middle School, we had to wait for a bus that came around 3:15 p.m., but school got out at 3:03 p.m. We had less practice time because the school practice time was from 3:10-5:00 p.m. but now we practice with less time. We need to change before getting onto the bus to go back to Clague.
When you play sports, practice is the most important thing. And not that I wasn’t grateful, but the top of that the field at Steam had a huge bump on one half which caused many players on the Clague team and others we played to trip and lose the ball. The field was also uneven; one half was about 15 or 20 feet shorter than the other half which was a huge disadvantage.
As of right now, the district has not shown evidence of new fields at Clague ,which is going to be bad for future athletes that love the sport and want to play. Will they have to go to a different field like how the team of 2025 did or will the sport just be gone from the school completely? This much is true, Clague is at a disadvantage in outdoor sports until we get our fields back.
