Clague sent students of Jennifer Inaba’s science class on a field trip to a recycling center on Thursday, April 18. The purpose of the trip was to teach the students about how waste and recyclable matter is treated in Ann Arbor.
The trip also included a guided tour of the recycling center. While the students were not able to directly go to the center due to safety constraints, they got a clear explanation of what happens in the treatment plant by a guide assigned to each bus.
Clague 7th grade student Luke Verbrugghe said that the trip was “fun” and “very informative.”
“I learned what kind of garbage can be recycled,” Verbrugghe said. “ I learned what types of stuff can be recycled and trashed and other(s) composted.”
7th grade student Zheng Li said he learned the type of garbage that can be recycled and how the center sorts through their waste.
“Seeing the garbage helps us learn because we learn how to deal with garbage,” Li said.
Inaba said the trip will occur next year and is excited to see any changes they might implement based on the feedback they received.
“It was nice for students to be able to look at what happens to their waste close up,” Inaba said.
