Book Review: The Song of Achilles
January 22, 2022
A popular and great to read collection of books have been books on Greek and Roman mythology. Greek heroes, gods, hilarious modern twists, the list goes on. Author Madeline Miller has written two books in this group: The Song of Achilles and Circe.
The Song of Achilles is centered around the Greek hero, Achilles, best known for his infamous heel and his glory in battle, especially the Trojan War.
Miller’s spin on his story paints him in a more delicate light, told from the perspective of his lover, Patroclus. Patroclus, an exiled outcast meets Achilles, and becomes his closest confidant, best friend, and love. The two traverse the many adventures and conflicts that eventually lead Achilles to the Trojan War, which he goes to with Patroclus.
This book was beautiful, a gorgeous and warm retelling of a well known character. I especially enjoyed how it was told from the perspective of someone close to Achilles, not Achilles. This allows us to truly marvel at the influence and respect Achilles earned by being the greatest warrior of all time from someone who idolized him just as much. We get to see the deeper, more personal side of Achilles through Patroclus, the only person he ever opened up to.
Miller’s writing is beautiful and descriptive, full of soft tenderness for the two main characters, while also showing the harsh backlash being the best earned Achilles. She tackled the material as if she was the first to tell it, and her take on it was breathtaking. The book brings tears to your eyes by the end, and leaves you touched.
I would recommend this to anyone who appreciates Greek mythology, a healthy dose of action, heartwarming romance, and fabulous writing. Please be warned there are a few adult scenes in the book.
Miller has taken an already amazing Greek myth and made it even better, making it come to life with her powerful storytelling skills and delicate take on the plot. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to go through all the feels and loves Greek myths.
