Following the release of Clague’s inaugural poetry contest submissions, the results of it were disclosed in the morning announcements on April 28. Through the ruling of ELA teachers Philip Cartman, and librarian Kim McLean, the final verdict of whom won the competition were released.
First place winner and eighth grader Benjamin Wang wrote a prose on his sentiments of departing Clague, called “Echoes of Time.”

“I am grateful to the ELA teachers for the time they invested in this opportunity and for selecting my poem,” Wang said. “The process of creating the poem was easy because I wrote about how I feel about leaving middle school, as reflected in the poem.”
Sixth grader Aeda Baang was awarded second place for a poem on the ambivalence of emotions — “Feelings.”

“I felt really happy because it was the first poem [I had] written, and I got second place,” Baang said. “I was actually really surprised, but I felt really good and happy.”
A total out of 22 submissions, these two students were chosen to receive a prize of a Booksweet Bookstore basket, which includes a $50 gift card, poetry books and a bag of stickers for Wang and a surprise gift bag from the library for Baang.
“It was difficult to choose as many of them were very well-written,” McLean said.
