When two young rival journalists find love through a magical connection, they must face the depths of hell, in a war between gods, to seal their fate forever” – “Divine Rivals”
It all starts with 18 year old Iris Winnow, who is struggling to keep her family together. Her mother is drowning in bottles of alcohol and is becoming more and more distant from the real world every day. Meanwhile, her brother Forest Winnow is sent off to fight in the war between two goddesses who are sending the mortal world into shambles. Leaving Iris alone with her mother while a war is brewing.
To support her family and fulfill her writing dreams, Iris has to vie for a spot in the newspaper Oath Gazette competing with an equally skilled writer, Roman Kitt. But what starts as friendly competition, quickly twists into an unexpected story, keeping you on the edge of your seat at all times.
Rebecca Ross’s “Divine Rivals” was a roller coaster of emotions. Throughout the book, Ross captures the key emotions with detail. Making the reader truly feel what the character is going through, in just a few short pages. The real magic though, lies at the heart of the characters who are skillfully crafted through their experiences and inexperience, feelings, and emotions, allowing the story to resonate with you as they make choices that define their future.
The characters, I believe, are the ones that piece this story together, if any one person was missing, this story would have resonated with me less. For each character has their own battles they need to face but these are common struggles that the world throws at us. I think Roth has the talent of making every person count.
I would strongly recommend this book, as I finished it in just a day, and it has most certainly claimed a spot as one of my favorite books. So to anyone who wants a magical experience, and a good dose of reality along with it. “Divine Rivals” can be found at any AADL Libraries or Barnes & Nobles bookstores. So if you do decide to read “Divine Rivals” I can say with peace of mind, that it will fulfill your need for a book that will lure you into the fairytale world, and have you enchanted every page you read.
