On Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2024, an animal interacted with a DTE transformer, causing the Northern district of Ann Arbor to experience a power outage— including Clague Middle School. From 11 p.m., Clague students and staff accommodated their schedules around this interference.
Clague eighth grader, Elin Volet, was in third hour, making puzzles in Ms. Taylor’s English Language Arts class when the power outage occurred.
“Going to the bathroom was actually impossible because it was completely black,” Volet said, “and I couldn’t charge my Chromebook for A2 Virtual.”
In room 133, Raleigh Woods, Clague ELA teacher, was with his seventh grade class when the lights turned off. Woods adds on his perspective as a part of the Clague faculty:
“The power outage did disrupt the regular flow of school,” Woods said. “But I appreciated it because students got the chance to see adults as vulnerable as they were to the power outage.”
The situation was eventually resolved for Clague at around 1 p.m.
“I was overall impressed with how professional and well-behaved the Clague students were responding to the power outage,” Woods said.
