FTC is a competitive robotics challenge in which middle school teams design, build, and program robots to complete various tasks in a timed match. The challenge is different each year, with this year’s game, “Into the Deep,” featuring a futuristic underwater exploration theme. Teams must build robots capable of navigating obstacles, scoring points, and completing mission tasks — all while collaborating with other teams in alliance matches.
The Clague Robotics Team has been training hard in preparation for this event, and their performance at the qualifier demonstrated their technical skill and strategic thinking. Clague’s team was especially recognized for their impressive robot design, which combined efficient mechanics with a robust programming strategy. Their ability to adapt to the dynamic game environment was critical in securing a top-tier position.
The team’s coach Charles shared their excitement after the competition.
“The team did an outstanding job today. Not only did they work tirelessly to fine-tune their robot, but they also displayed incredible teamwork and problem-solving abilities during the matchups,” Charles said. “Their third-place finish is a testament to their hard work and dedication, and I couldn’t be more proud of them.”
The team members are thrilled with their results but are focused on improving.
“It’s exciting to see all our hard work come together,” key programmer Charles Hyman said. “But we know there’s always room for improvement. Especially with the robot’s performance in autonomous mode. We’re already planning how to make adjustments to prepare for the next competition.”
Looking ahead to the State Championship
With this strong performance at the qualifier, Clague Robotics has earned a solid position moving forward into the Michigan Flint Qualifier. Even though seventh, grade 23606 secured an astonishing third, only two teams reached states. Qualifier competitions will determine which teams advance to the FIRST Tech Challenge State Championship later in the season.
The Clague Robotics Team is already gearing up for the next challenge, with many team members participating in after-school practice sessions and weekend strategy meetings. As they prepare for the next Qualifier Championship, their goal remains clear: improve their robot, fine-tune their strategy, and continue learning from each competition experience.

“Our team is always striving to learn and grow,” Mrs. Mary Sheaffer-Manthey, lead manager of the 7th grade team 23606. “We’re ready to face new challenges and give our best effort at the next qualifier We’re thankful for the opportunity to represent Clague, and we’re excited to see how far we can go this season.”
The Clague Robotics Team would like to extend a big thank you to their mentors, parents, and supporters who helped them throughout this journey. As they continue to progress in the FTC season, they hope to inspire even more students to get involved in robotics and engineering.
Future events
The team will next compete in the Flint qualifier FTC competition, scheduled for Nov. 23, 2024, aiming to secure a spot in the state finals. The excitement is building for what promises to be a thrilling robotics season ahead!
